The Tax Bill Already Inside Your Retirement Plan

For decades, business owners have been told to defer taxes now and pay them later. It works during the building years. But many owners arrive at retirement with nearly all of their wealth in one tax bucket, and the IRS holds a share of every dollar in it.

That share is set by the tax rates in effect when you withdraw, not when you saved. The 2025 tax law made current brackets permanent, but "permanent" only means no built-in expiration date. Future Congresses can still change the rules.

The Predictable Pressure Points

The pressure points are predictable: required minimum distributions starting at 73 or 75, Medicare premium surcharges, more of your Social Security becoming taxable, a surviving spouse moving into single-filer brackets, and a business sale stacked on top of plan withdrawals.

Three Buckets, Not One

Tax diversification spreads retirement assets across taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-advantaged buckets so you can choose where income comes from each year. For many owners, the tax-advantaged bucket is badly underfilled.

Where Cash Value Life Insurance Fits

Properly structured cash value life insurance is one tool owners use alongside Roth accounts. It is not a retirement account, and it only works when designed, funded, and monitored carefully, with attention to MEC limits, loan costs, and lapse risk.

Life insurance is not a retirement account or qualified plan. Cash value access is generally income-tax-free only for non-MEC policies, withdrawals up to basis, and loans while the policy is in force. Policy loans accrue interest and reduce the cash value and death benefit; a lapse can trigger taxes. Non-guaranteed elements are not guaranteed. Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Life insurance is not a bank deposit and is not FDIC insured. Prospera Financial offers insurance products.
